2018 Oxy Acetylene Torch Review: Why it is preferred?

Gas welding is a procedure that uses gases such as acetylene, hydrogen, natural gas, etc. which is mixed with oxygen in correct proportion to produce an intense flame. This flame is further employed to fuse two or more different metal parts. Gas welding is used to weld materials that may be engineered or alloys.

Oxy-acetylene Welding:

Oxy-acetylene welding originated in 1903 and was used for soldering or brazing purposes as such. This process was highly-efficient and economical at the same time. Oxy-acetylene cutting equipment involves a process where acetylene mixes with inflammable oxygen to cause a flame (temperature of the flame is 3300 degree Celsius approximately). This flame is generally used for melting all sorts of metals, ferrous and non-ferrous both.

Crucial gases like oxygen and acetylene are stored in cylinders at a temperature of 1500 N/cm2 and 170 N/cm2 respectively. The cylinders are Coupled with a welding torch, as a result of which flame of myriad nature develops; neutral, oxidizing and carburizing.

The type of flame produced simply rely on the ratio of mixed gases. A neutral flame is preferred for materials like cast iron, low carbon steels, cast steel and more. In case if the flame is of oxidizing nature, the oxygen in the flame is higher than acetylene. This kind of flame is popularly used to weld manganese steel, brass, and bronze, etc. On the contrary, a carburizing flame is high on acetylene content and binds metals like aluminum, nickel, and others.

Why Oxy-acetylene?

Though there are many reasons why oxy-acetylene torches are popularly used for residential and commercial purposes, we have decided to bring forth the primary ones- Precision, power, portability, Versatility, and price.

Best oxyacetylene torches available in the market are known to cut metals with high precision. When these torches are used as a cutting tool, the resulting cut is extremely powerful and precise. Moreover, these cutters are portable as well. One can use oxy-acetylene torches for a variety of purposes including heat, braze, solder, gouge, rise cut and combine various metals. In the end, the price of these torches somewhat marginal. One can browse the internet to look for best quality oxy-acetylene torches at a fraction of the cost quite easily.

Acetylene has dominated the cutting gas industry over the past as it was the first in the market and performs better among the other metal cutting products available in the market. Though there were a number of fuels available with higher BTU Value and flame temperature, acetylene still outperforms other fuel gas. But, due to the introduction of hydrogen based gas cutting system, the Cutting Welding Supplies manufacturers have moved to the hydrogen based fuel for cutting and welding.

Hydrogen was used widely in underwater oxy-hydrogen torches for decades. But the new hydrogen-oxygen mixture has formed as a by-product of the plasma arc technology and widely used in the welding cutting tools. The fuel is a 2:1 ratio of hydrogen and oxygen, which explodes violently when ignited. After the usage of Propane, the mixture has considerably reduced the explosion limit. Moreover, the new torch that doesn’t use propane is best at offering high-speed cutting which led to the massive adoption of hydrogen based fuel. And the interesting fact is that it is neither a hydrocarbon nor creates hydrocarbons when ignited. This cutting fuel can cut metal up to 12 inches thick and incorporates many characteristics to become the future of metal cutting gas.

As one of the leading industrial gas distributors, we strongly recommend you to adopt the hydrogen based gas cutting system for your business. Here’s why:

Environment Friendly

Unlike the conventional system that uses acetylene and other fossil fuels, the hydrogen is eco-friendly and emits no carbon dioxide. This is due to the chemical bonding of hydrogen and oxygen which burns the fuel at the tip of the torch, emitting fewer fumes. Without a doubt, this is the next-gen metal cutting fuel which enhances the working environment.

High Quality Output With Low Heat Input

The principle of hydrogen gas is as similar as LPG. When compared to the thermal input of LPG, hydrogen gas input is reduced up to 60% to create high quality products. Being said that, it also ensures high precision products with a smooth surface and sharp corners.

Reduction Of Person-Hours

One of the major advantages of hydrogen gas is the effortless removal of slag. Alike any other fuel, hydrogen gas also creates slag or dross, but it requires fewer person-hours to remove it which contributes to productivity and cost reduction.

Reduction Of Running Cost

Comparing the cost of oxygen and propane for oxygen gas cutting and the cost of generating oxygen and hydrogen for hydrogen based gas cutting, it is possible to cut down the cost by approx 30%.

High Productivity

The cutting speed of hydrogen gas is 10% to 30% higher than any other metal cutting fuels. You can save the production cost to a greater extent with hydrogen cutting system. It saves your time, resource and ultimately, your productivity.

Now that you are aware of the benefits of adopting the hydrogen based gas cutting system, you can effectively improvise your productivity and reduce your production cost. It offers many advantages not only from the environmental viewpoint but also from the viewpoint of productivity and cost management.

Oxy Acetylene Torch Kits to Cut the Hardest of Materials

In various industrial operations, cutting of different kinds of materials is required to perform a task. Some of these materials like steel are very hard that cannot be easily cut with normal cutting tools. In order to cut such metals, the same heating technique is followed that is used to weld them. Extreme heat is generated by using different gases that creates a high temperature.

This high level of heat can easily cut the hardest of materials. However, the technology and tools to perform welding as well as cutting are different. Still, the gases used in both the operations are same. Earlier, oxygen and hydrogen gases were used to create high temperature by mixing them but now, oxygen is mixed with acetylene that produces a temperature of around 6000F to cut strong materials.

Just like oxy acetylene welding, cutting of different metals is also performed through torches. With the help of an oxy acetylene cutting torch, the metal is heated to a very high temperature known as kindling temperature. This kindling temperature creates a stream of oxygen that is placed on the metal. As the metal combines with the steam of oxygen, it creates a cut through the formation of oxide slag. Such types of cuts created by oxy acetylene torches are called kerfs. However, some precautions are needed to be taken during oxy acetylene cutting such as the temperature should not extend beyond the melting point of the metal otherwise the cutting torch will melt the metal. Also, the oxidation between the metal and oxygen should be strong enough so as to maintain temperature ignition. And, the most important factor required in the cutting process is purity of oxygen that should remain 99.5% or higher.

As obvious, the main component in the oxy acetylene torch kits are acetylene cutting torches that are different from welding torches. Cutting torches have three pipes that run along the length of the torch at a 90 degree angle along with a trigger that applies the oxygen to the metal’s surface when pulled. In addition to the torches, cutting kits have safety gear including protective clothing, gloves and helmets; pressure vessels, hoses, gas pressure regulators and other tools.
